About Sky Project

Above: View of the experiment for "SKY", in Sakai 2003

I used to see the sky which was reflected in the water in my childhood. Especially, in the rainy season, there were a lot of pools on the ground. I felt it like the mirror that was installed there. One day, I found the cloud that changed the form little by little. In the night, I found the moon there. I was momentarily under the illusion that I was in the sky. I often enjoyed the moment. This Project "SKY" is based on remembrance of the experience.
Yumiko Yamazaki-March 2003

The installation invites viewer interaction with seeing themselves in the reflective plates and also making people become more aware of the changing sky and how it is the same yet different in many different times and places. The disks reflect the sky, people stopping by, trees, animals, etc.

I imagine some situations of "Sky".
One day, a blue sky appears on the surface of round copperplates on a ground.
One other day, the cloud appears there.
On a rainy day, raindrops appear there.
At night, the moon appears there.
People find out the sky on the ground.
People find out birds in the sky there.
People find out the face of themselves there.
People find out the inside of themselves there.

The cloud appeared.

A part of tree appeared.

A dog appeared.

This installation shows the passage of time.
In the beginning of the exhibition, The clear image is reflected on the surface of the work.
People see the image of the sky on the work, clearly. However, day by day the work made of copper is affected by the physical influence of the moisture. In other word, The surface of the work will be changed by corrosion. In the second half of the exhibition, the work does not reflect the image clearly. It will be seen like the painting of Impressionism.
In the last, probably the work does not reflect at all. It will be seen only simple rusty
copperplates.
At that time, we realize that the work-"Sky" shows not only the illusion like a mirror but also the characteristic of the substance.

I give attention to the backside of this copperplate moreover.
This side will be influenced by corrosion more than the face side. Probably, the face will be carved by the water that evaporates from inside of soil. Regretfully, it is not possible to observe the back till the end of the period of the exhibition. However, after the exhibition, I am going to print the back side of the copperplate that was corroded on washi paper. The paper-Ganpi fiber paper- will show elaborately even a minute change.
After that, I will show these prints.

I decide the place where the plates establishes with people.
Beforehand, I choose an area for the installation.
People of Sumter residence the position of the plates in the area.
They choose the place where they liked, and put the plate. I do not instruct about the
place to them. I think, that is important for the work. The change by natural, environment and various conditions of Sumter are constitution elements of an important work
Especially. I also think, viewpoint of the people is one of the elements of nature for this work.

The nature that I think about is composed of wind (air), rain (water), the sun (light), ground (earth), and time. These are the most important elements for all creatures on the earth. If we lose one of them, we are not able to survive. Our existence depends on the nature, and it is necessary for us to realize this now. We can feel the intention of the nature, but we are unable to see the actual form. I think, however, that we can embody it by means of this metaphor.

The important purpose of my work is to show the relation and the balance of the position from nature, and to change them into a condition where everyone can see the intention of nature. I want to embody the intention of the nature and present it in the form of an artwork so that people can see and feel its importance.

I feel that it is necessary for us to see and feel this importance now.
